Ricky Ponting and Adam Gilchrist Join IPL

October 30, 2007

Australian captain Ricky Ponting, vice-captain Adam Gilchrist and Pakistan batsman Shahid Afridi are the latest high-profile signings for the Indian Premier League (IPL). South African opening batsman Loots Bosman became the seventh South African to join, increasing the strength of foreign players to 44.

Ponting and Gilchrist join an extensive list of Australia’s frontline players to join the league, including Andrew Symonds, Michael Clarke, Michael Hussey, Brett Lee, Matthew Hayden, Nathan Bracken, Brad Haddin, Mitchell Johnson, Simon Katich and Jason Gillespie. Retired stars Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath were the first two Australians to commit to the league, back in September.

Afridi is the third Pakistan player to join to the league after Mohammad Yousuf and Shoaib Akhtar.

The 15 Australian signings would add a "new dimension" to the IPL, according to Lalit Modi, the chairman of the IPL.

"I am sure that the cricket-loving public of India would cherish the opportunity to see the world champions turn out for their local teams," Modi said. "The induction of the prodigious Aussie talent will add a whole new dimension to the Indian Premier League."

Cricket Info: Pakistan, Australia Not Unbeatable, Says Ganguly

October 25, 2007

With just over a week to go before India take on Pakistan, TOI spoke to Sourav Ganguly, India’s captain in two of the last three series between the two sides. Ganguly exuded confidence that India could come through the next six months with a good show. Excerpts

How would you look back at the recent Australia series?

They were a good side and we played well in patches. The final scoreline (4-2, Australia) was far more closer than it looked.

Any particular gain from this series?

It is difficult to say. Murali Kartik bowled very well in this series; it would have to be his bowling.

We have a tough season coming up, how do you view it?

Oh yes, it is going to be six months of tough cricket. We have to be fit, fresh and back ourselves. Pakistan, Australia and South Africa are good sides and it will be good to play them.

Pakistan will be without Inzamam-ul Haq (retired) and possibly Shoaib Akhtar (fitness, disciplinary etc). Does that mean we start favourites?

I think the only person they will miss is Inzamam, the rest will be available for sure. I don’t believe in this favourite tag, but yes we have played good consistent cricket over the last eight-nine months… Belfast, England, Twenty20 World Cup. So we will have the confidence. Moreover, I also think that we have the players to beat them.

The last two times we’ve played, Pakistan’s batsmen rattled up big scores. Do you see a change this time?

Last time they had Inzy, who is a big influence. Pakistan will find it difficult to fill up his spot. But even last year with him in the side we beat them 4-1 in the One-dayers, as also in 2004. Anyway, it is all about how well a side plays on that particular day.

Their Test attack has a very dangerous look with Shoaib and Mohammed Asif?

They have a good attack, Shoaib and Asif are a good pair. But it will be different and difficult as they will be playing in India.

Two of their batsmen — Younis and Yousuf — have been very prolific. Will they impact the series as well?

But we have beaten them even when they had Younis, Yousuf and Inzy in the side. And the last time they toured we didn’t lose the Test series it was 1-1. We were pretty unfortunate not to win the first Test at Mohali, after we won in Kolkata, we had just one bad Test (Bangalore). That too we were unlucky to lose. Anyway, the past has no meaning because it will be a fresh start.

Will the Pakistan series be the right preparation for the Australia tour?

Australia will be a different kettle of fish. It will always be good to win against them.

In 2003-04 we surprised Australia by playing well in Test matches. Can we repeat that this time?

It all depends on how well we play. There is no reason why we can’t do it this time as well. We have a good Test bowling line-up with Zaheer Khan, Sreesanth, RP Singh, Anil Kumble, Harbhajan Singh and, now, Murali Kartik is also bowling well. A good attack is always the key to winning a Test match.

On the last tour it was our experienced batting line-up which batted them out of the series. Do you see a similar role for the senior batsmen this time?

We have an experienced middle-order and the batsmen are in very good form at the moment. It was because of our batting line-up we have been able to beat England recently in the Test series. No other side except Australia has managed that in the last seven years. But this of course is a new series.

The Aussies have started targeting each and every player. Are they affected by the fact that Indians are giving it back to them?

I don’t read too much into this talking bit. What is most important is what you do in the middle. When you play hard cricket a lot of things happen, but ultimately what you do in the middle counts.

Finally, will a Test series win in Australia be the most satisfying moment of your career?

Well there have been quite a few moments like playing well against Australia, winning the 2001 series against them (Aussies), and winning in Pakistan, reaching the World Cup final, two Champions Trophy finals and playing a part in a winning squad in England. Yes a series win in Australia will certainly add to it.

McMillan Declared His Retirement

October 17, 2007

Another hot news in cricket world, Craig McMillan the New Zealand all rounder announces his retirement from one day international as well as domestic games due to his personal and health problem. He told that now this is the right time to declare announcement. According to him the last season was one of the best time in his cricket career.

There had been reports that McMillan would quit to take up a contract with the Indian Cricket League and he said he would consider that option but it was no certainty. "I will now spend time with my family before deciding what direction I will take with my future," he said.

Some Fact,Ups and Down in his career: emoticon

May 1997 - At 20, makes his one-day international debut against Sri Lanka at Hyderabad. Scores 10 as a fragile New Zealand batting order falls 53 short of its target.

November 1997 - Has more success in his Test debut, scoring 54 against a strong Australia at Brisbane. Would prefer to forget the second innings, when Glenn McGrath trapped him lbw first ball.

February 1998 - Takes advantage of a weaker opponent, Zimbabwe, to score his maiden Test century at Wellington in his fourth match. Displays the style he will become known for by bringing up the milestone with a six over long-on and finishes with 139.

May 1998 - Strikes a blistering 142 from 179 balls in a Test against Sri Lanka at Colombo, launching six sixes and helping New Zealand to a comfortable victory.

August 1999 - Scores an unbeaten 107 in the third Test against England at Old Trafford. He struggles through the rest of the tour but New Zealand register an important 2-1 series win.

December 2000 - Joins with Nathan Astle to set a New Zealand Test record fifth-wicket partnership of 222 against Zimbabwe at Wellington. McMillan’s contribution is 142 and he earns the Man-of-the-Match award.

February 2001 - Scores his first ODI century in crunching style, belting five sixes on his way to 104 from 75 balls against Pakistan at Christchurch. He equals Chris Cairns’ record for the fastest ODI hundred by a New Zealand player.

March 2001 - Breaks the record for most runs in a Test over when he clubs 26 from Younis Khan’s part-time legspin at Hamilton. McMillan makes batting look ridiculously easy, hitting five fours - including three reverse- pulls and scoops - and one six.

October 2003 - After being dropped from the tour of Sri Lanka earlier in the year, McMillan returns with a superb fighting 83 not out against India at Ahmedabad to save New Zealand from what looked like a certain defeat. In the second Test at Mohali, he is one of four batsmen to score a century, but his unbeaten 100 is his last Test hundred.

November 2004 - McMillan clashes with Adam Gilchrist in a Test at Brisbane when the two disagree over the etiquette of walking. Gilchrist, a self-proclaimed walker, gives McMillan a spray because he does not walk after Steve Bucknor turns down an appeal for caught behind.

June 2006 - Loses his national contract after a poor run of ODI form. Considers taking up a career as a salesman to help pay the bills.

February 2007 - Caps off his comeback with the fastest century in an ODI by a New Zealand team player. Blasts 117 from 96 balls - the century comes from 67 deliveries - as he overshadows Matthew Hayden’s 181 and steers New Zealand towards a successful chase of 347 at Hamilton. In typical McMillan fashion, he brings up his hundred with two successive sixes off Adam Voges.

September 2007 - Proves that the frenetic Twenty20 format suits his destructive style as he finishes the World Twenty20 as New Zealand’s leading run-scorer. He makes 163 at 40.75 with an impressive strike-rate of 181.

Sachin Tendulkar Says Cricket Has Changed a Lot

October 10, 2007

According to Sachin Tendulkar cricket has changed a lot from sometimes because now its become a fitness game. Everybody has to kept fit himself for becoming an integral part of the game.

“The youngsters in the team were enjoying their game and it was good to see them in a positive frame of mind,” Tendulkar said.

Asked about the happiest moment in his cricket career, he said “I cherish the wins against Australia, England and South Africa on their home turf as it was my dream to taste success in away games.”

Former captain Rahul Dravid said the Twenty20 format was still evolving but stressed the basics were the same in all forms of cricket.

Fielding should be superlative and teams were “playing positive aggressive cricket,” he said, referring to the shortest version of the game.

The former captain said that in his formative years he was told not to play the ball in the air and score runs through grounded shots.

England Won The 2nd ODI Against Sri Lanka, Levels Series 1-1

October 5, 2007

England showed a great team performance in 2nd ODI against Sri Lankan and by doing so they won the match and level the series 1-1. Its a great victory for England because they won the ODI match against Sri Lanka after a long time. The pace duo built on Man-of-the-Match Owais Shah’s superb 82 as England dismissed the World Cup runners-up for 169 after posting 234-8 to win their first One-Day International in Sri Lanka since 1982.

"It was very disappointing to lose the first game. The boys showed a lot of character to bounce back. We were fantastic in all departments of the game," said Collingwood.

"Owais played a magnificent innings, to get such a score on a pitch like this and play the shots. It was a good toss to win. We then took early wickets and put them under pressure."

Left-arm paceman Sidebottom (2-23) and Broad (2-42) troubled the Sri Lankan batsmen with pace and movement under lights to reduce the hosts to a paltry 38-4 in the opening 15 overs.
